Message from City of Danville Municipal Utilities regarding harmful algal bloom on Herrington Lake

The City of Danville is aware of recent reports regarding a potentially harmful algal bloom (HAB) at Lake Herrington.  While the existence of algal blooms in lakes and streams are common across the country, the City of Danville wants to assure all customers that the current harmful algal bloom (HAB) in Herrington Lake poses no risk to the city's drinking water supply at this time.  With warming water temperatures and increased runoff from storm events, an HAB may naturally occur near the surface of lakes and streams with potential for public health concerns.  However, the raw water intake at Lake Herrington for the Danville Water Works system is deep below the water surface.  Also, the water treatment process in place at the Danville Water Treatment Plant is more than sufficient to effectively treat and remove algal toxins at the current levels.  Our advanced water treatment process includes multiple layers of filtration and disinfection and is designed to handle seasonal and environmental changes like algal blooms.

Danville Water Works remains committed to providing safe, high-quality drinking water to the community. Our utility will continue to maintain contact with all State regulatory agencies, monitor conditions in Herrington Lake, and adjust treatment as necessary to maintain safety and quality.
